Bridging the gap between diagnosis and capacity
Psychological Capacity Evaluation (PCE)
for RTWSA clients
Our Psychological Capacity Evaluation (PCE) is an assessment that translates a worker's psychological symptoms into clear, practical information about their ability to function and participate in work.

An introduction to our
Psychological Capacity Evaluation (PCE) assessment
The Psychological Capacity Evaluation (PCE) helps stakeholders understand the relationship between psychological symptoms, workplace demands, and a worker's ability to safely and sustainably engage in employment.
It is a structured, evidence-informed assessment designed to identify how a psychological injury impacts a person's functional capacity and ability to participate in work. Unlike assessments that focus primarily on diagnosis or symptom severity, a PCE examines:

-
What a person can currently do
-
Where limitations may exist
-
What supports may help improve recovery and return-to-work outcomes
About the Assessment
what does the Psychological Capacity Evaluation assess?
The evaluation examines the impact of a psychological injury across a range of domains that are relevant to both daily life and workplace participation. Areas commonly assessed include:
Attention, concentration, and memory
Cognitive flexibility and problem solving

Emotional regulation and stress tolerance

Task persistence and mental endurance

Communication and interpersonal functioning
Planning, organisation, and self-management

Workplace participation and behavioural functioning
The assessment also considers how an individual's current capacity compares with the actual demands of their pre-injury role or another suitable work role.
About the Assessment
the assessment process
A PCE is completed by a Registered Psychologist. It typically includes the following steps:
step #1
A comprehensive clinical interview and psychological history.
step #4
Standardised psychometric and functional assessments.
step #2
Review of relevant medical, occupational and background information.
step #5
Evaluation of barriers affecting work participation, recovery and functional performance.
step #3
Assessment of occupational demands through discussion with the worker and, where appropriate, their employer or supervisor.
step #6
Comprehensive written report with findings and recommendations.
The evaluation incorporates validated tools such as the WHODAS 2.0 and DASS-21, with additional assessments selected where clinically indicated, including measures of stress, trauma, cognitive functioning or pain-related psychological factors.

Who is a PCE for?
When Is a PCE Helpful?
A PCE may be valuable when there is uncertainty regarding a worker's current capacity, when recovery has stalled, or when stakeholders require objective information to support decision-making. It can assist in:
-
Determining current work capacity
-
Identifying psychological barriers to recovery
-
Clarifying suitable duties, restrictions or adjustments
-
Supporting return-to-work planning
-
Informing treating practitioners and certifiers
-
Providing functional information that may support independent medical assessments or broader claim management processes
The assessment aims to provide practical, evidence-based recommendations rather than simply confirming a diagnosis.
Assessment Outcomes and Recommendations
recommendations report
The PCE translates assessment findings into practical recommendations, exploring barriers and strengths, and helping identify interventions that may improve participation, confidence and functional capacity over time.
Reports are designed to support informed decision making and facilitate collaborative communication between workers, treating practitioners, employers, rehabilitation providers and insurers.
Recommendations may include:
-
Graduated return-to-work strategies
-
Workplace modifications or role adjustments
-
Psychological treatment recommendations
-
Skill development and coping strategies
-
Environmental or routine-based supports
-
Risk management considerations
-
Ongoing treatment or rehabilitation recommendations
