One of the most elusive and difficult challenges that we face is that of change. Most of the time when dire circumstances are thrust upon us we can adapt, make the changes necessary to get through, even if only temporary or conditional. But what about when the goal is to make positive long term change…the kind that move you closer to being your best self?

Surely it’s a simple as making a decision and just getting on with it right?

Not the case. Human behaviour is complex and we are designed to protect ourselves and seek out good feelings as a first reaction . Sometimes this can work to our advantage but sometimes our minds are prioritising a short term, instant feeling of wellness to the sacrifice of the larger change or habit that needs to develop.

Procrastination, avoidance, people pleasing are all examples of short term maladaptive behaviours that allow us to feel ok in the moment only. These can manifest as active choices, or when undertaken regularly, as a habit which requires even less executive control and thought. Habits are hard to break and take a while to form.

Understanding some of the behavioural blockages to change can assist in creating a positive roadmap

  1. First you need a goal or something you want to achieve

  2. Understand the behaviours that you undertake regularly that are stopping you from achieving this goal

  3. Identify the reward that goes with the behaviour…and yes this where understanding the minds in built mechanism to keep us feeling positive and safe will assist

  4. Identify any cognitive distortions ~ things that we say to ourselves that aren’t necessarily true or fact, that reinforce stopping the new behaviour, giving up or not even trying

  5. Just keep going

  6. Keep the list small ….the irony is that one SMALL thing , one SMALL change that can change the entire landscape over time.

And lets face it this is about BEHAVIOUR. Change is nothing if there is no behaviour or action….otherwise its just an idea…a plan…a thought…or worse – something to over-contemplate and avoid!
